How Long Does it Take to Become a Chiropractor?

Posted on March 29, 2025March 29, 2025 By Jack Sleath

Chiropractor

A chiropractor is a person who helps people with pain (back pain, mainly). They also work with improving movement, muscle pain and the spine. It takes a few years of school and training to become one. In this article, we break down the steps using plain English and cut to the chase of the question.

Step 1: Finish High School

Step one is graduating High school. This typically takes 4 years to complete. You need to get good grades, especially in subjects such as science, because it helps you in the future. After high school comes your pursuit of college — that’s where the absolute chiropractic path starts.

Step 2: Go to College

Most chiropractic colleges require you to have three or more years of college before being allowed to enroll in their school. You study biology, chemistry, and other basic sciences during that time- some complete a full four-year degree, like a bachelor’s degree, which can help. So, here, this step takes three to four years, depending on what you can choose.

Step 3: Graduate from Chiropractic College

This part takes four years. In chiropractic school, you learn how the body functions, focusing on the spine and the muscles. You also learn practical skills, such as manipulating another person’s back for pain relief. A chiro clinic in Brampton employs such trained personnel because they can provide solutions for back pains. The program teaches spinal decompression therapy, a technique that can relieve back pain without surgery.

Step 4: Get Licensed

You’re not done once you graduate from chiropractic school. Chiropractors must be licensed in their field. That means taking a big test that shows what you’ve mastered. In some places, such as Canada or the U.S., this commitment is known as the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners exam. It can take a few months before and after the end of school to prepare for and take the test. Once you pass, you may begin work in a chiropractic clinic.

Total Time

Let’s add it up. High school takes four years, but that’s two something everyone does, so let’s start counting at four. College is three or four years, and chiropractic school is another four years.

Getting licensed, then, might add a few months. To become a chiropractor, it takes around seven to eight years in total since graduating high school. If you already have a college degree, it’s more like four years for the chiropractic side of things, plus a bit for licensing.

Extra Training (Optional)

Others wish to further their education after graduating. They may study additional topics, such as athletic spine decompression therapy. It could be one or two more years to come. Others partner with a registered massage therapist to provide additional solutions to back pain. But this extra time isn’t required to get to work – only for those who wish to specialize.

Where You Can Work

All of this leads up to you being prepared to help people. You can work as an associate or own your chiro clinic in Brampton. Chiropractors specialize in getting at pain naturally, so they’ve got to work with things like the back. Some even look for a registered massage therapy to provide patients with additional care options.

Final Thoughts

It takes seven to eight years after high school to become a chiropractor. It combines college, chiropractic school, and passing a test to be licensed. So you might keep training longer if you add some extra training.

If you want to assist people with answers for back pain, such as spinal decompression treatment, the time is well worth it.
