The HRS Aboard Ship

An HRS of HMR-161 is seen on the helicopter deck of the Danish hospital ship, Jutlandia. The Jutlandia sailed from Copenhagen arriving in Pusan Harbor in October 1950 where it served as an evacuation hospital; providing treatment and temporary hospitalization until the patient could be moved to a long-term care facility. Upon completion of its first tour in Korean waters it had the helicopter deck installed. Returning to Korea for its second tour it was anchored at Inch'on, close enough to the fighting front that wounded could be evacuated to the ship directly from battalion and regimental aid stations. The Jutlandia returned to Denmark on October 16, 1953, following the end of hostilities.

Two views of four HRS's, one HO4S, and one H-19 on floats aboard the battleship USS Wisconsin. Try as I might, I've been unable to determine their exact use but it had something to do with a visit aboard by President Rhee of South Korea. The photo on the left is looking forward from the stern. The Navy HO4S (UP58) is in the foreground (right) with four HRS's of HMR-161 lined up along the left (oops! port) side. The H-19 on floats can be seen in the photo on the right between the barrels of the aft gun.
The USS Thetis Bay (CVE-90) was built as a Casablanca-class escort carrier and launched in 1944. In May 1955, Thetis Bay was converted into the Navy's first assault helicopter aircraft carrier and re-designated as CVHA-1. With that change, she became a complement to the attack transport; her helicopters supplementing landing craft thus giving the Navy and Marine Corps the flexibility of a vertical assault capability. She is seen here operating off the coast of southern California somtime around 1956. Two glossy Sea Blue HRS's and one Light Gull Gray HRS are seen on her deck. The Thetis Bay was redesignated as LPH-6 (amphibious assault ship) in 1959 and she was decommissioned and sold for scrap in 1964.
Finally, the images below illustrate that HRS's were also operated from LST's. Below left, a Light Gull Gray Marine HRS from HMR-161approaches from port for landing aboard LST 1073, USS Outagamie County. On the right, crewmembers aboard LST 735, USS Dukes County, look over HO4S (HRS) Bureau Number 130176.
